At West LA College, it is the focus and commitment in the Child Development Department, to create an environment, where students can explore who and what it is to be a whole, healthy and happy human being. When students become educators themselves they can then create that opportunity for the children. We see and relate to our students as individuals, who by design come to us with special gifts and their own unique way of learning. Therefore, we use a multitude of creative teaching modalities to try to meet the different learning styles of our students. We try to model in the format and content of our courses what we expect our students to demonstrate when they become teachers in a classroom. The WLAC program is also appropriate for those individuals who are currently employed in the field of Early Childhood Education and have a desire to enhance their skills, knowledge, and professional growth. The program will also fulfill requirements that are needed to maintain and advance the State licensed teaching permits. Child Development ClassesThe Child Development Certificate and degree program at WLAC prepares students to seek employment in private Early Childhood Programs, State and Federally funded programs. The scope of the Child Development program is to create a foundation for educational aides in elementary schools, and for anyone considering teaching as a profession. Where To Go After WLACYou can of course enter the workforce and we will assist you in the networking process. We will assist you in the process of acquiring your teaching permit as well. In addition to this you can also consider transferring to a four year institution and we will offer advisement in which colleges and universities have programs that will prepare you for the field of Early Childhood Education. Every year we hold a Student Orientation Program where these institutions come and meet with the students. The transfer Center also hosts “Transfer Nights”.
